Daily Inspiration: Meet Danny Russo

Hi Danny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I made the bold leap from Youngstown to Columbus to pursue my passion for interior design. Little did I know, the universe had bigger plans in store. Just one week into my studies, I landed not one, but two of the most significant clients of my career. It was a whirlwind of excitement, prompting me to abandon further schooling and plunge headfirst into the industry. Now, nearly two decades later, I can confidently say it was the best decision of my life. From the helm of Daniel Russo Home, my own thriving interior design business, I’ve built a network of devoted clients who have stood by me through thick and thin. Each year brings new challenges from fresh faces, pushing me to grow and evolve. The journey has been nothing short of exhilarating and fulfilling, and as we look ahead to the new year, I’m eagerly anticipating the exciting projects that await.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Every small business owner knows the rollercoaster ride of challenges. But nothing prepared me for the monumental struggle of navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply chains ground to a halt worldwide, turning my promised project timelines into mere aspirations stretched across endless months. It was a test of patience and resilience like no other. This year we’re finally returning to pre-pandemic operations. Supply chains are humming with efficiency once more, delivering large furniture shipments well ahead of schedule. Finally, I can bring my clients’ visions to life promptly and precisely, creating an atmosphere of pure satisfaction. It’s not just about meeting expectations—it’s about exceeding them, crafting a profoundly positive experience for everyone involved.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Not only am I a designer, but I’m a therapist, firefighter and an arsonist. I spend my days putting out fires that I’ve created. As designers, we’re always pushing our contractors to do things outside the box. Whether it’s installing an 88 pound chandelier, we’re always challenging all of our trades and learning new things. It’s why I’m always on the forefront of design shifts and trends that are constantly reshaping the industry. Right now, I’m focused on aligning my business to the digital shifts to Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Clients are able to put on VR goggles and see their home or their space with my designs before we move forward with purchases. It’s a revelation that’s completely changed my business for the better. I’m proud to say that I’m set apart from others because I’m willing to take risks, navigate trends and apply them to my business in a way that enhances communication with clients.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m full of useless trivia information. I can tell you the chemical makeup of paint, what year the 747 was launched, modified and retired. I know the history of Apple computers. It seems odd, but I actually use all this information to help drive my designs! I thrive on shattering conventional design norms, boldly integrating patterns and textures that clients might never consider—yet absolutely should not overlook. A large part of my business is eagerly embracing the challenge of piecing together elements that seamlessly realize our clients’ design dreams. As a designer, I excel at adding, bridging gaps, and pivoting in ways that ensure breathtaking cohesion and functionality. I was one of the first designers in Columbus to take advantage of the digital revolution, which has shown clients that I’m always innovating!
