Danny Russo to Voyage Michigan: “I Choose Timeless Furniture That Grows With My Clients”
We had the good fortune of connecting with Danny Russo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danny, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’m not afraid to break the rules or take risks. Distinctive design is about pushing boundaries – within balance. I approach my clients’ design projects by, first and foremost, listening to their thoughts and creating a plan that they’re comfortable with. I go a step further by making adjustments in a space where only interior designers know where to look. The end result is, my clients and I, we work towards a shared vision that’s bigger and better than what we started with. I curate the clients’ aesthetic based on their personalities, likes and dislikes and choose timeless furniture that grow with them.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m always learning, and diving deep into the burgeoning inflection points shaping our industry. I also pay close attention to construction code laws. I know more about architecture, engineering and building codes and regulations than most designers – I’m not just making pretty happen, I’m making pretty happen within proper building laws! Anyone can be a designer, but only a designer can make magic happen. I’ve made plenty of mistakes throughout my career, but as I’ve always said, once you make a $20,000 mistake, you never make it again!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite activities to do around Detroit of course include visiting the city’s range of unique food and drink offerings, but what is a must-do on my itinerary is strolling through the Heidelberg Project in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood. It’s the creative in me that’s drawn to this one-of-a-kind art installation that has transformed homes into outdoor sculptures (literally polka dots painted on the entire exterior of houses!), spacious lots into open air museums and more. Walking through the street gives me chills!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my mentor, Julia Malloie. She taught me invaluable lessons as I grew my business.
